Chapter 38
Garage number 10 was halfway along a line of twenty rented units, half of them used for cars while most of the remainder contained furniture and other flotsam and jetsam from peopleâs houses.
The Master instinctively looked both ways before turning the key and raising the white up-and-over door, though he knew there would be no harm if anyone looked inside. All a casual observer would see were a few large and shabby-looking wardrobes and an equally ancient dining table.
After closing the door, he switched on the overhead light and allowed himself a smile. This was important work, and it wasnât without risk, but he was looking forward to it with eager anticipation.
Much of what he was about to do mirrored the assembly of Cummingsâ suicide bomb, but the mobile phone in his pocket was a new addition to the mix. Connecting it would be fiddly, but it was amazing how much you could learn from googling on the internet and he felt confident.
He opened the largest wardrobe, carefully removed three blocks of Semtex and three detonators and placed them on the table. Obtaining them had been difficult, but they were used extensively in quarries throughout the UK and it was incredible what people would do for money.
Next, he moved to a second wardrobe and pulled out a heavy-duty black backpack and eight boxes of 6 mm nails. He tipped two of the boxes into the backpack, lifted it, decided it was strong enough to take all eight and tipped the other six boxes in.
He took the Pay-as-you-Go phone out of his pocket, set it to vibrate and re-wired it so that instead of activating the vibration motor it triggered a micro switch. When he had finished he rang the number from his personal phone to check it worked, then a second time to be absolutely certain.
Once he was satisfied, he pushed his phone to the end of the table to ensure he didnât accidentally redial the last number called. To do so would be suicide.
Literally.
The Master wiped his brow and held both arms out in front of him. His hands were shaking and he closed his eyes briefly then forced himself to breathe deeply, drawing large amounts of air in and exhaling them until he felt relaxed enough to continue.
He reached for one of the detonators and pushed it slowly into one of the Semtex blocks, then repeated the exercise until all three contained a detonator. He then laid the blocks next to each other and wired the detonators to the microswitch.
Lastly, he wrapped duct tape around the explosives, detonators, switch and phone so that they were all tightly bound together.
Moving carefully, he gently placed the bomb on top of the nails in the backpack, zipped it up and swung it onto his back. It was heavy but not unbearably so.
He put his phone back in his pocket then turned the light off, closed and locked the door and walked back to the van. It was a silver Mercedes Sprinter, stolen by a local villain and fitted with false number plates.
